By day, Mike Kowis, Esq., is a mild-mannered tax attorney for a Fortune 500 company in Texas. By night, he swaps a three-piece suit for a pair of tights and a shiny red cape and then begins his duties as a modern-day SUPERHERO (a.k.a. Adjunct Faculty Member) for one of the largest community colleges in the Lone Star State. His superpower is ENGAGING COLLEGE STUDENTS in Business Law and Corporate Tax classes. He has spent the past 20+ years fearlessly fighting for truth, justice, and the American way! Well, not really. But he has spent that time trying to fully engage his college students in night classes, which is just as hard.
A little more about me… I’m a corporate tax attorney (a.k.a. “tax geek“), college instructor, speaker, and award-winning author.
When I’m not practicing tax law, teaching, speaking, or writing, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, cooking, reading, performing stand-up comedy at Open Mic Nights, and competing in off-road races on ATVs and UTVs.
To date, I’ve written 9 nonfiction books, including:
-
- ENGAGING COLLEGE STUDENTS: A Fun and Edgy Guide for Professors;
- 14 STEPS TO SELF-PUBLISHING A BOOK;
- SMART MARKETING FOR INDIE AUTHORS: How I Sold my First 1,563 Books and Counting!;
- TEXAS OFF-ROAD RACING: A Father-Son Journey to a Side-by-Side Championship;
- AMERICAN TAX TRIVIA: The Ultimate Quiz on U.S. Taxation;
- TEXAS OFF-ROAD RACING 2: The Battle for ATV and Side-by-Side Championships;
- THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF TAX WISDOM: Quotes, Quips, & Quiddities Every Tax Advisor Should Know; plus
- THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF RETIREMENT WISDOM: Amusing Quotes for Retirees.
In addition, I co-wrote (together with my dear friend Sharon C. Jenkins) a *FREE* Kindle eBook called MAXIMIZED YOUR BOOK SALES WITH DATA ANALYSIS.
I also give 10 to 20 AUTHOR TALKS per year at annual conferences, colleges, and local group meetings on various topics related to my books. My online and in person presentations include topics such as Student Engagement Tips, How to Self-Publish a Book, How to Market Your Book, U.S. Copyright Law for Authors, and What Authors Need to Know about Small Business & Taxes.
I earned a bachelor’s degree in General Business from Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX), a law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law (Houston, TX), and an advanced law degree in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center (Washington, DC). I’m currently licensed to practice law in two states and live in Texas with my family.
